Designing a cultural simulation that teaches computer programming

Categories:  Bill Babbitt, Culturally Situated Design Tools

I’ve been making great progress on developing a cultural simulation that will teach computer programming while modeling Kente cloth weaving. It will be great fun to try it out with the students at Hackett, and the really exciting aspect is that we have teachers in other schools that are also interested in working with the software.

Currently, the most important part of the project is to finish the cultural pages on the CSDT website, and get the software linked over to those pages. I have all the images done from photographs taken from the Kente cloth I purchased from the weavers in Ghana. Once it’s all together, it will be very exciting to see if the cultural context is meaningful to the students.
